NAS Keflavik Iceland is the host command for the Nato base. The major commands are U.S. Naval Air Station Keflavik, Air Forces 85th Group, Iceland Defense Force, NCTS Keflavik, and U.S. Naval Hospital Keflavik. Decendents of Vikings-- the Islanders speak their own language-- Icelandic, but most of the younger generation speak English as well. Living ON-BASE is mandatory. The base is very small--gated community. It is a very nice place to raise your children; great schools, close community and hardly any crime. The people in the commmunity become like a second family. The Cola $$ is great! Downside-- the schools do not offer Football, baseball, softball, drill team, or Drivers Ed. The base exchange (NEX) is very small. Not a lot of variety. Shopping off-base is expensive and the style is very "European". The winters are very cold and very windy. It is dark approximately 21 hours of the day. The spring/summer is opposite; light over 21 hours of the day--forget fireworks for 4th of July. However, Iceland is a beautiful county. Plenty of waterfalls, geysers and glaciers. The Icelandic Horses are a sight! You will enjoy your stay if you get out and see what the country has to offer. Must see: Blue Lagoon, Glacier Bay, Gulfoss, Sneifellsness and the Westman Islands. Take advantage of MWR Tours to Ireland, Scotland, England and Germany--very economical. If you would like to see pictures of the Island, visit www.mwr.is Enjoy the Aplesin and Lava Java!
