Fort Bliss

We were at Fort Bliss for 2 years. You must like the atmosphere of the desert to enjoy El Paso. Our last year there it was growing and lots of construction was being done on base and the freeways around it. It’s not that bad of a place if you keep busy. There is a lot of shopping available and Restaurants come by the dozens. Mexican restaurants are in plenty, which is nice on a weekend when you want to have a margarita and listen to the Mariachis play. Not much to explore around the area since Mexico is the nearest place and that’s not a place you would want to visit at this time. You have to be careful after dark because the crime rate is a little high. Make sure to live in a military community, which isn’t hard to find since the whole town seems to be military by now. Lol The people that cross the border to shop are rude and their driving skills are horrible so you will have to put up with that. The hospital is not the greatest but which hospital is on base is. I know it was a little disorganized on base from the complaints I heard from the soldiers. But to be honest every place has its up’s and down’s. Pros: Shopping is good. Lots of stores to choose from. Tons of restaurants and sports bars. Hooters, Buffalo wild wings, Carlos and Mickeys to mention a few of the popular ones. Ruidoso is only 2 hours away. Tombstone is 3 and, if you don‘t mind driving further out California and Disneyland are 13 hour drive away. Weather is not too bad. summer gets in the 100’s and winter can get into the 40’s. Renting apartments or houses is not bad for the BAH Rate you get in El Paso. New Housing being built on base. If you are a gun collector lots of shops and a nice shooting range near base. Cons: It can get a little boring with no beaches, site seeing or major amusement parks near by. Traffic can get pretty bad. Hospital is big but the staff is a little rude and the ER is a mess. Housing I hear is an issue for placement. Had friends wait over a year on the waiting list. For lower enlistment the housing looks pretty run down. Weather can change rapidly and flash floods can get bad sometimes. Crime rate is a little high. Stay away from downtown after dark. Nothing but problems. Jobs for spouses are in the few unless you are into Retail or Restaurant business then there is plenty of work! So in the end if you are being stationed for a couple of years at fort bliss, don’t be afraid just make the best of it.
