Big doesn't mean best

Ft. Hood

I have been living at Ft. Hood for about 2 years now. When my husband was deployed I moved home. Happily he returned home but sadly I had to move back. This definatly is a very big base. Although most people don't even see half of it. On base it's not so bad. Killeen is also pretty big and the traffic reminds me of Chicago. And it is very easy to get lost. It is a pretty industrialed city. Every restuarant you could think of. But not very family oriented (although the city and base are trying) and definatly not friendly. The weather is hot almost all year and very dry. It is not a safe place to live. Although no place is safe, Killeen is crime ridden. Even on base, too. Just check the police logs. There are plenty of jobs. But be careful-this town has scams everywhere. Child care on base is really awesome. The wait for housing is horrible. Over a year if you're a SPC and under. So most people are forced to get off base housing. Apts aren't very cheap. And they are crappy. If you're looking to rent try a house or a duplex in a nice area. And they are cheaper! Go figure. We are PCSing to Ft. Leonard Wood soon and I cannot wait. There may not be much there but at least there will be peace and quiet!
