My husband and I have been living on base at Ft. Benning from May 2004 until October of this year. This is the first and only base we have lived at. I worked as a banquet/restaurant server at the hotel Hilton Garden Inn, and during my time there we housed many soldiers on weekends or those here on assignemnts and those responsible for building the new housing. I have met many people and made Ft. Benning what I could out of it, but it was too difficult to find a friendly face as a neighbor or a friendly worker in the PX or hospital. One of the soldiers that stayed in the hotel for 3 months had many stories of all the bases his family has lived in and the best way he described Ft. Benning, was "it's like the Government forgot about Ft. Benning......." Since I also got to know many civilians in COlumbus through my job, I also realized you can try to make Columbus out of it what you want, but again, to try and find a friendly place/face is impossible.
This is a very slow moving community with nothing to offer. I couldn't imagine wanting to come here or wanting to settle down here, but I applaud any of those who can.
Best of luck to those future families moving here, and my advice is to have a great attitude and kill Columbus/Ft. Benning with YOUR kindness.
