When I heard that my husband was being stationed at Shaw I was happy because a friend of mine is from Sumter and said that I would love it since it is a small town. He wasn't kidding. You could stand on one end of the town, spit, and it would hit the other side of town before you even put your lips back together. You can't find a job here unless you know someone. You can't get a job on base unless you have spousal preference. The school system is not good at all. If you live on base expect to have your house look dirty because some of the floors are so stained from previous owners, they don't enforce the "all walls must be painted before checking out" rule (we have 2 different shades of white in several rooms), and the yard inspectors can't make up their mind if your yard meets code or not. There are only 3 ways to get out of Shaw, 1)Go to Korea 2)Get out of the military 3)Change your career and have to go somewhere else for training.
