This base is the ABSOLUTE worst base in the Army. Not only is it 45 miles away from the nearest town, the services on base are horrible. The very small PX has things you don't need and doesn't have the things you do need. There is only 1 road leading in and out of the base which has a 55mph speed zone. This speed zone is watched and I have heard that if the base police catch you speeding it is a ticket worth $100-$300. This is unbelievable! The most macabre aspect of this base is that the only road that leads in and out of the base is aligned with white crosses to remind you of the points on which several people have died due to unsafe driving. The price of gas is high (California) and the commissary does not have a great selection of food - same old same old. You walk out of the commissary with a few bags and it is about $40-60. There is hardly any good places to eat BK, Taco Bell, Popeyes, Pizza, Charleys and Baskin Robbins but they are always so packed that you have to wait forever to get some food, especially when soldiers come to the base to train you can't go anywhere. It is thoroughly miserable especially when they take off about $200 a month for the cost of food during the training excercises which only last two weeks. Where is the accountability of that? I could go on but there isn't enough space on this website to talk about all of the drawbacks of this base. They are building new houses and a bigger px and commissary, but for this they are charging more on our commissary bill. My advice, stay away from here at all costs!!!
