Pretty nice

Charleston AFB, SC

Many people hate living in Charleston, but its like any place, you have to make the best of it. We live on the base itself so for us its really nice since we have a shoppette, commissary, and AAFES within a 2 min walking distance. The base itself is great. It is gated so everyone has to go through a check point to get on base. We have a well equipped gym, 4 softball fields, a soccer/football field, little league fields, jogging/biking and nature trails. Several parks throughout housing and near the ball fields. We have a newly renovated golf course and club house, bowling ally, theater, swimming pool. We have plenty of housing units from 2-4 bedrooms with carports, some are nicer than others since the renovations have taken place, but all will eventually be renovated. The area outside of base could be better, but its still really nice. There are plenty of places to shop and most are in one main strip within about 15 mins from base. The mall is really nice and close, we have 3 Walmarts all within 15 mins, plenty of nice dinning close and even better dinning in the downtown area which is about 25-30 mins. There are 2 main beaches pretty close that are both really nice for lounging, surfing, or swimming. Both beaches have nice shopping and nice dinning near by. There is plenty to do with the kids, like the South Carolina Aquarium, 3 different awesome water parks, dog parks. If you like bars youll be in heaven, there are many many nice bars like O'Reillys, Wild Wings w/ thursday night karaoke. There are a few clubs near by for dancing and concerts. The downtown area has several places to visit like shops, museums, outdoor markets, historic places and downtown is really a beautiful place to spend all day shopping and dinning. Everything is easily accessible by I-26 or I-526 and pretty easy to find. Off base housing is really nice, pricey but nice. You have to shop around a bit to find the best prices on renting. Real estate, not too sure about. The only complaint that I have about Charleston is that people are really horrible drivers. In any given day there are atleast 10 accidents during rush hour. In the very rare occasion that we get snow flurries, everything including base shuts down and the accident rate nearly multiplies.(no kidding) During ruch hour, you better stay home unless you have to be out. Otherwise youll be sitting in traffic for close to 3 hours, maybe more if there is an accident along your route of travel. All in all, Charleston is a really nice place to live can be costly, but still nice. If you have a chance to PCS here, think about it. Its not as bad as everyone says.
