Someone who's lived there

Fort Wainwright, Alaska

Located in Fairbanks, Alaska. It does get cold in the winter time. -40 and below. I was never into winter sports, but the winter did not bother me. I grew up in Anchoare/Ft. Richardson area. I live in Hawaii now and the thing I like about AK is the scenery, animals, no cockroches or centipedes, and the grass in Alaska is one that you would feel comfortable letting your kids roll in. It's about a 5-7 hour drive depends on how fast to Anchorage. If you come from a small town, then it's perfect. There is Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Sears, Fred Meyer/Kroger, and a movie theatre. They also have Chili's, Denny's, and other local places to eat. It's a small town, but you can't get lost. There is the Chena Hot Springs where you can go in the winter time and go into the springs. Like I said, it's cold, but as everyone is saying, make what you can of it. Don't just say it sucks cause you don't want to do anything about it, make some friends. But I tell you, the drive from Fairbanks to Anchorage is one you won't want to miss. Plus you get to see Mount Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. And if you are known to drive erratically, just be careful in the winter time...studded tires aren't going to protect you all the way. If you want some pictures, you can email me at: wacky_bananas@yahoo.com in case you are due to go to Fort Wainwright or Anchorage/Richardson if you'd like.
