I didn't live on post, but I will tell you what it's like in Anchorage.
It's bigger than Fairbanks by far. You'll have more places to hang out, shop, eat, and activities to do. If you have kids in high school, they have like 6 different ones in town, but the closest to this post will be Bartlett-Begich High School which I actually graduated from. I don't know how it is now, but my experience was the best. If your kids drive, then they can always go on post or base for lunch which was so much better than school food.
The winters aren't as bad as Fairbanks, like temperature wise, but it may feel colder since we are closer to the water. There is more of a wind chill factor I'd say.
It's fun living there. I'm enjoying my time away, but I do miss some parts of it. The scenery is nice and there are always your friendly neighborhood moose. :o)
Make the best in everything you do, including when you PCS/ETS. It's all what you make of it I guess.
