Ft. Huachuca

Ft. Huachuca

Ft. Huachuca, AZ: After so much green, this base is a shock to the system. Gray, Brown and bleak. Ft. Huachuca is an hour and a half south of Tucson. First of all, stay away from the port towns, (you are so close to Mexico that you go through a boarder patrol station to get to Tucson) there is such high crime and rampant kidnapping that the base has forbid military personal from crossing. Ft. Huachuca is near Sierra Vista, which is a small town with a small mall. There is a Target, Walmart and K-mart. There is plenty of hiking, ghost towns and some camping. The summer gets well into the 100's range and monsoon season hits around July. The elementary and middle schools are great, they have done so well with my son (he's special needs). The high school is not so great, it is enormous and very impersonal, with rampant over crowding (I student taught at the high school). The politics here are corrupt. There was a million dollar mistake and no one told anyone until there was a mysterious tax increase on property tax's. Stay away from The University of Arizona South, aweful!!! (important). The post is small, there is only a clinic on post, no hospital. The hospital off post has an ongoing saying "go in for a hang nail, come out in a body bag". My surgery at that hospital was a nightmare. I will drive to Tucson for any other ones. I have not found any rollerblading trails (the one next to the road doesn't count) there are some biking trails through the San Pedro area and around some ghost towns. There are more restaurant choices than Ft. Drum (the Chinese food still sucks, well actually worst than Drum) and Bisbee is neat, Tucson is nice, but there are not many jobs here and I can't wait to leave.
