Great Falls, Montana

Malmstrom, AFB

My family and I have been stationed at Malmstrom AFB for 3 years now. I like the base; it's not big, but they are building all new housing and just opened a new BX and 24 hour Shopette. It just became privatized, so they will be making more changes in the future, some good and some bad. The town of Great Falls is small, but I like smaller towns. It's super easy to navigate through, but be careful, some streets do not have any stop or yield signs. The locals say to use the Montana right away. The cost of living here is high and the jobs don't pay squat. The houses are old and rent is outrageous. The summers are beautiful though, but way to short. The winters are dreadful, with temperatures getting down to -32, with severe wind chills. Speaking of wind, it is always windy here. We are lucky to see a day when the winds are only blowing 9mph, I am talking 35 mph gusts all day long. It can be quite miserable. If you like camping, hunting, fishing, and outdoor stuff, this is definitely a great place for you. There are some great creeks and waterfalls to go to. There is not much on shopping or good places to eat. The schools seem to be pretty good, I will find out this fall when my youngest starts kindergarten.
