NTC, FORT IRWIN,CA was really nice. The housing were very comfortable. The elementary schools are not that far at all. Most kids would walk to school. The people in the community were very caring. I would like to say my husband's unit was very close knit. The only downs would have to be the closing of the commissary at 5:30. Things may have changed now. The PX was small as well, but they would try to offer as many items as some retail stores. The next town was Barstow which was approximately a 45 minute drive. Victorville was around a hour drive,but it was well worth it. They offered various outlet stores such as GUESS, GAP, OSH KOSH,and Ralph Lauren. The climate was lovely all year. The post was small, but at the time of our leaving they were making many upgrades. Give it a try. You are at least two hours from La. and Vegas.
