I have only been the the "North Country" as they call it up here in Watertown, NY since October, but I have to say, so far I am quite impressed with Ft. Drum and the surrounding area. Ft. Drum offers quite a lot to military families, and the support you receive while your spouse deployed is outstanding. The housing wait time is short, depending on where you want to live. Most of the "military" housing is actually located off post in one of the 3 surrounding counties. 20 minutes north of Ft. Drum is the 1000 Island region and there are lots of things to do, 70 miles south you are in Syracuse which is the nearest major city. In the city of Watertown there is just about everything you would want to do, it's small, but I call it "new comer" friendly because everything is off 1 exit! The people in the area are friendly. The only thing negative I have to say about being stationed here is that the job market is quite limited, and if you move here be prepared for LOTS of snow! The average snowfall in this region is about 170 inches! I moved here from sunny GA, so it's been an adjustment, but it's not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. There are lots of cold weather activities to participate in such as ice skating, skiing, snow shoeing, etc... In short, I wasn't happy at first to move up north after 11 years living as a southerner, but now that I have adjusted to living in the "North Country" I'm pretty happy.
