Mountain Home AFB

I have to agree with most of what Beth lower down on message board said about this place. Although she mentioned both a Walmart and Kmart and the Kmart is going out of business - there is just not enough business in the surrounding areas for two big stores like that. We have a few fast food restaurants also, for example they opened both an Arby's and a KFC in the last year which is pretty big excitement for us. The cost of housing off base is very expensive but I don't think the houses on base are so bad although this is the only base we have gotten base housing at. We came from an overseas assignment with at a NATO base which means we didn't have U.S. facilities at hand so I find the commissary and BX adequate although agree the selection is poor. The bottom line is this - Idaho has a wealth of outdoor recreation, not all of it very close by but reachable for the weekend. If you are an outdoorsy type who like rock climbing (like my husband), whitewater rafting, off-roading, biking, camping, etc. you will probably love it here. If you enjoy the convenience of nearby shopping or like going out to eat(there are only a few "real" restaurants and they are more like diners), this would definitely not be a good choice for you.
