Fort Riley

Fort Riley

When I first came to Ft. Riley I hated it, but I've been here 3 years now & I like it now. If you love snow & frigid winters & tornado watches every other day in spring, it's great! It's really is beautiful here, there are rolling hills (great for sledding) beautiful stone houses on post, and lots of historical sites. There's wildlife everywhere, so post has lots of hunting, fishing & outdoor activities in spring/summer. There is not really much to do here, the shopping is horrible so I go to Topeka (about 60 miles east) for entertainment. We've lived on post since I got here, but only because husband came off Korea tour, so not sure how hard it is, I think about 5 months waiting. Off-post housing seems to be okay, just stay out of Junction City, to me it's a dirty little town. Manhattan (13 miles East) is okay, bigger & cleaner, but I am not a KSU fan..if you can stomach all the purple wildcat junk it's okay. However coming from an Aggie, make your own decision. I'm fortunate to be in medical field & have a good job, but over all jobs pay low here. The people are not as friendly as back home & bad drivers are rampant. I don't have children so not sure of the schools. There is no good mexican food for about 500 miles in any direction! Overall, it's not a bad place once you get used to it, could be worse!
