If you like fishing then you will like Mayport! Besides great fishing areas around the base (Little Jetties Park in particular..it is know for the abundant shark teeth that can be found at low tide)the fishing on base is pretty good too. There is a jetty on base that many people fish off of just about every day. You have to be careful with the water current especially during tide change. There is also a fishing pier on base that is pretty good when the tide is in. Along side of that pier, on that side of the base, you can catch some good size fish too. I enjoyed throwing my cast net into the 1-2 ft. surf during tide change to catch bait fish (mullet). I also threw my cast net into the jetty rocks when the tide was in and I would catch some very large mullet or other fish. There were many things to look for on the beach on base as long as you knew what you were looking for: olive shells, sand dollars, sharks teeth and others. Something else that I thought was really neat was watching the carriers etc. come thru the channel while sitting on the huge jetty rocks. Mayport was right on the beach and the "big city" Jacksonville was not too far away for shopping etc. Naval Station Mayport is a place that was alot of fun but I think everywhere we go will be fun if we make it that way. :)
