Ft. Wainwright, AK

First let me start off by saying no matter what post you are at, it is only going to be as good as you make it. With that said and done. Ft. Wainwright is an interesting place to be stationed. We arrived here last year. We got a very nice 3 bdrm house w/i 11 of arriving. All the appliances are new, wall to wall carpet, heated garage, basement, and the govt. supplies washers and dryers. Winters here are hard at first, but you just have to find something that strikes your fancy. We have Birch Hill, for skiing, snow boarding, and tubing. An iceskating rink, ice hockey, bowling and an indoor pool to say the least. The ice scuptures are beautiful. The ice scupting contest happens here every year. Summers are unbelievable. There are so many things and places just comme to life. In Fairbanks you have Alaskaland, (amusement like park), the fair comes to town, the animals are all over the place, and the migrating birds come back. The mosquitoes are nothing to mess with, make sure you have some repellant. Not much in the town of Fairbanks though, Sam's wholesale, Fred Meyer, Super K-Mart, and a small outlet type mall. North Pole is 12 miles away, Eilson AFB is 21. Both very small but worth the trip. Anchorage is about a 6 1/2 hour scenic drive. Mt. McKinnley is so beautiful. You can see it from aobut 200 miles away. Anchorage is nice. You have to go there to go to the type of malls that you would see in the lower 48. But they have most of the same stores. As you can see I have not said many negative things because like I said in the beginning, it's what you make of it. If you ever get the chance come "North to Alaska." It is an experience you will never forget.
