Fort Gordon is a wonderful post to be stationed. The climate is very moderate in winter and a hot, hot, hot in the summer. Located in Augusta, Georgia, it is just a short trip to many vacation spots. Disney World is about 8 hrs, Columbia, SC zoo is 1 1/2 hrs, Atlanta is 2 hrs and the beach is 2hrs away. Augusta has one large Mall, and many popular retail stores like Wal-mart, Target, Barnes and Nobles, Michael's crafts, and more. Additionally, there are many parks, play groups and kid friendly businesses like The Family Y, The Kid Gym and Chuck E Cheese. The on-post housing is not outstanding, but is adequate. There is a brand new on-post Elementary school, that opened in the Fall 03, that is run by Richmond County School District. The off post housing is great. There are many apartments, and houses to rent close by, that are very affordable. However, it was our experience and that of many others I know that house payments are cheaper than rent. A average price for a 3 bedroom 2 bath house in Martinez (a burb of Augusta) is about 85K. There are many nice areas to live that are near Fort Gordon. In my opinion, the nicier ones are Martinez, Evans and the outer portions of Grovetown. All of these are about a 15-20 minute drive to a gate. The medical care is good, but some services are contracted out to The Medical College of Georgia in downtown Augusta. The only bad thing I can say about Eisenhower Army Medical Center is the pharmacy is horrible. The average wait for medicine is 2 hours. There is another pharmacy located in the PX, but it is only for re-fills. Well, that's about all I can say. This was our 4th duty assignment and it was an extremely enjoyable place to live. Hope this helps.
