Andrews AFB

Andrews Air force Base

Since I arrived in November of 2003, I have tried to let this base grow on me but to no avail. The BX is a joke. I don't know who's fooling who, but the prices and selection are a waste of time for most, with Target and Walmart in the neighborhood. The commissary is under renovation but is very large and has a good selection of your favorite food items. Of course when we arrived we were told there was absolutely no housing available on the base and we could either rent, buy, or go to Summerfield which is military housing located in Landover (less than 1 mile from Fedex Field), about 10-12 miles north of the base. House prices around here are more than ridiculous, with the median price being around $350,000 for 2brm/2bath. We checked out Summerfield. We were given keys to three different townhouses to choose from. All were adequate, so we choose one. The hospital is okay but the system and protocol leave much to be desired. I guess being a military dependant renders you as second class citizen, or at least that's the treatment you get in the clinics,...if you let them. The schools are horrid and if you can...home school. Private schools cost way too much for a decent education and the public schools will have your child thinking standardized testing is the only thing they have to learn in school ("No Child Left Behind" is big business in Maryland Pubic schools) Overall, skip this base if you can. If you can't, be prepared.
