We were stationed at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey for 4 years & just returned stateside June 04. Despite the occasional "lock down" or curfew imposed on the base it was a FABULOUS! assignment!! My daughter attended the DoDDs school on base from 9th thru 12th grade and graduated with a small class of 12 seniors. The base is small and the community is small as well. BX is new; new Taco Bell, Baskin Robbins, Anthony's, BKing. It does get hot & humid from @end of Mar thru end of Oct. Water bottle is a part of your 'gear' during the hot months.
How spoiled can one get?? Gardeners are $25 a month--they cut your grass weekly, water lawn, pick up garbage, take out garbage 2x a wk & will walk your dog if you ask them. (that is if they are not afraid of your dog---most Turkish folks we met were afraid of dogs).
We had a house maid who came in once a week for $20-$25 and cleaned from top to bottom, did laundry, scrubbed everything, cooked a Turkish meal. She was fabulous!!! I wanted to bring her with us when we PCS'd. If you have small children, they will also babysit & clean your home for @$50 per week.
Base beauty shop for facials, manicures, pedicures, haircut, shampoo, color, waxing, massages---manicures & pedicures were $4 each. AND if you saw the Oprah segment, they also use string to do your eyebrows---very precise!
Shopping was fabulous!! Bartering is expected & you can get pretty good at this.
