My husband and I recently got married the first week of December 2006. He came here after boot camp for "A" school, Power School, and Prototype. Right now he is just finishing up Power School. I moved here Jan 2nd. Now when I first got here, it was a bit hard to get around and even to get to the mall in North Charleston, because the street signs are either too small or a lot of the roads don't have signs at all!! However, once we got around, we realized how nice it was to live here. The housing is "base housing" but it's not actually on the base. This is my first time living in "on base housing" so I don't know if it's normal or not. Our house is on one of the roads leading to the main street, so it's about a fifteen minute walk (about one block) from the commisary. The NEX is right down the street, and there's a movie theatre (which we get to go into for free), library, gym (which is free, yes for the sailors and dependants too), car wash, and gas station. There's a little bit of everything right around here, even a McDonald's for those lazy moments when I don't feel like cooking any of the three meals we eat. Here you can choose before you move in whether you want a gas or electric house. The elementary school is right in the neighborhood, the high school and middle schools aren't too far either. The off-base housing is alright, however I recommend signing up for that friendly little extra pay the government will give you for living off base. The weather is nice. It rains about once every week since we've been here, so if you have a plant or two, it keeps them nice and healthy. During Jan. so far it seems after everytime it rains, it gets cold, otherwise the weather is quite comfortable. The people are very nice here, no complaints yet. My next-door neighbor is very nice.
