Hi, if you are deciding to come to MCAS Cherry Point or you don't have a choice. It is a okay place. We have only 4 popular restaurants which are about a 25 minute drive away. There is a Applebees, A Texas Steak House, Ruby Tuesday's, Golden Coral, and last but not least. The Outback. The fast food restaurants..which are in town are Taco Bell, Wendy's, Burger King, McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Bojangles, Sonic and alot of chicken joints and chinese. They did open up a Japenese Sushi restaurant. We have a Wal-mart in Moorehead, and a Wal-Mart in Newbern. Newbern is where the mall is. It has a small mall. Not worth shopping in. There is a books-a-million, payless and some other chain stores. There is no best buys or Toys-R-Us. You have to Drive to Greenville or Jacksonville, about 45 minutes to Jacks and 1 hr and a half to Greenville. That is where all the shopping is and bigger city. The base is pretty much boring. There is a bowling ally..but it is usually hogged by Marine units who have leagues there. We have a movie theatre on base. It is being rennovated for repairs right now. It is pretty crappy. The inside is old and musty and the movies they show are fuzzy sometimes. It is okay. It is better than paying out in town for a movie off base. The hospital sucks. The care is not so hot. It is hard to get seen. The appointments are always booked up and you have to wait. Make the E.R your family practice..easier to get in. The E.R is considered sick call here. If you live on base. Base housing sucks. If you are Navy get used to dealing with Marine rules. Certain ranks get the better housing. The housing here sucks bad. It is old. They re-did the outside but still it is very small and not worth moving into. The elementary schools are okay. They are now yr round. Traditional no longer exists. My daughter goes to Havelock.
