Charleston, SC

Charleston Air Force Base

Well, this is my husband's first base. I was born on Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC so I'm used to bases almost. Charleston AFB is not "that" bad. The weather is nice I must say. Although beware of the summers--HOT AND HUMID! The fall so far seems to be mild and nice..temps still getting into the upper 70's. We both come from California so this is a new thing to us, being in the south. The people here are not very smart either. Drivers are horrible and the roadways surrounding Charleston and the base are packed at ANY time of day. Especially ASHLEY PHOSPHATE and DORCHESTER. You are about a 25 minute drive to numerous beaches (they're nice), 2 malls are very close by (one at either gate entrance), lots of places to eat and shop!!!! Dowtown Charleston is beautiful but crowded. During the day you might as well walk. Driving will get you no where fast. There are two colleges down here with 3 technical colleges. (Trident Technical College has 3 campuses..that is why) The base is beautiful. The housing is great too. Big yards, an attic, AC/Heat, carports...but in Hunley Park which is old navy house...it is horrible. Ghetto would be the correct word. The BX is nice, the shoppette isn't 24 hours but its ok...and the commissary is very stocked! More construction is being built behind the BX. There are three schools that surround the base (one IN Hunley Park). And PLENTY of activities for the children. Over all..CAFB is a great base to be at.
