Yokosuka Naval Base

Yokosuka Naval Base

Yokosuka is a bit more modern than I thought, although Japanese housing can lack the insulation which equates to really cold winters and really hot summers when living off base. The houses off-base are really small, but larger houses can be found further from the base (abt 30 minutes drive). The best off base houses, in my opinion, are located in Mabori area. On base, there are three choices - main base (mostly towers and townhouses), Ikego (15-20 minutes drive depending on traffic/accessible by train) and another one near Yokokama (30 minutes drive). Main base housing wait is about 6 months to a year). There are DODDs school on base (Elem/Middle/High School). Work is limited for spouses unless you are a fed worker, in which you get spouse preference, although not your first choice in jobs sometimes (I knew some RNs working in daycare). Youth Center was great for my school age child. Summer camp gave her a chance to travel to different amusement centers (She's been to Tokyo Disneyland 3-4 times). It is also close to major cities such as Tokyo, Yokohama, etc. Shopping is great as well, as there are two different bazaars a year and everybody seems to get carried away (a huge parking lot gets closed down to accomodate vendors from all over Asia). All in all, we enjoyed it there and actually miss it!
