I moved from California to Ft Polk, Louisiana and it was a huge culture shock. There is so much to do in Califonia and so many places to go, and
it is the opposite in La. You have to drive hours to get to a "city". The closest town is Leesville, and it is terrible. There are two restraunts and walmart. Literally. The roads are covered in potholes and the whole area is dirty. Now, you will have a good time there if you enjoy strip clubs or going to church. There are hundreds are churches everywhere. Those are your two choices of activities. Otherwise, you are bored. The housing is pretty small. We lived in a set of four houses, and we were upstairs, like in an apt. There is only one bathroom and they are very small. It is almost always hot there, too. There is never a breeze and the humidity is terrible. Sometimes you hear that the people in the south are friendly. Well, I dont know where the hell they are there. Almost everyone I encountered, including the people who work on post, are rude and really have no manners. If it can be helped at all, do not go to that post!! The only plus is that the Kindergarten classes on post are 7 hrs long, as opposed to only 3 hrs in California. If it can be helped, try not to live on that post!!
