We were stationed at Offutt AFB 84-86, 91-94 and we retired here in 1997 and have never regretted it. The weather is typical of the Midwest and Great Plains, you get used to it. There are tons of jobs here, if you're willing to work hard and dependability is valued above all. I became an Omaha Zoo volunteer in 1984 and have rejoined each time we've been here. The world's largest indoor jungle, A huge desert dome, the Kingdom of the Nights (with the world's largest indoor swamp) a huge salt water aquarium and the new Gorilla exhibit where you are the ones the apes are gawking at are just a few of the things at this zoo, named by various organizations as one of the best in the country, if not the world! You can even bring in your own food and drink, which you can't in many zoos anymore. There are many churches here, and plenty of volunteer opportunites, including Habitat for Humanity, The Western Heritage Museum and the Children's Museum. You will not be bored. Buying a house is still reasonable, compared to other parts of the country, and you can do lots of things in the city or drive country roads nearby. We were from Philadelphia and retired here gladly from our last base in FLORIDA. Lots of universities to further or start your studies. Welcome to the Cornhusker State!
