Not Bad

McGuire AFB

My husband and I were fortunate to get housing on Ft Dix which is adjacent to McGuire. The Air Force housing here on Ft Dix is only about 5 years old and very nice. All the neighbors that we have met thus far have been friendly. I imagine having a nice house helps greatly with the morale amongst the families. I haven't seen much of the housing on McGuire for the Air Force families there but most of the comments I've picked up have not been favorable. The area itself has taken some getting used to but my husband and I are learning to appreciate it for what it is. Cost of living off base here is quite high, at least in comparison to what I'm used to. The base is literally out in the middle of nowhere but this in itself isn't so bad. The countryside is gorgeous, there are lots of little antique shops, fruit/vegetable stands, farmers markets, family owned restaurants. With a few exceptions most of the people in the area are nice. I've never lived in a "small town" so I'm enjoying having the chance to experience the feel of it. The hard part is having to drive so far to get to the more developed areas where the malls, chain restaurants, and jobs are. The best thing about being in this area is the opportunity to take days trips to some really great places. New York City, Philadelphia, Gettysburg, Atlantic City, Cape May, etc. Being from the south, this has been an excellent opportunity to explore the NE. Your time at each base is what you make of it...and you could certainly do a lot worse than McGuire.
