Fort Knox

Fort Knox

We have been here for almost 2 years, this was my first military base so I have nothing to compare it to. The PX was just remodeled, and the Commisary is cheaper than Walmart!! I live on post in a 3 bedroom house that is about 6 years old, they are also in the process of putting in alot of new housing areas. We were told that there was going to be a wait for on base housing but we got a house in 3 days. It may have changed in those 2 years but I am not sure. The off post housing can get pretty expensive to rent, the electicity and gas is really high, BAH will not cover it if you have a family (we are a family of 5). We have a swimming pool that needs some work but is indoor and heated, a water park, a golf course, a movie theater, two post lodging hotels, the leaders club, and the rocker night club. The base is going to go through alot of changes in the next year or so because of BRAC moving the armor center to GA. My husbands chain of command has been great with us, they have been pretty family oriented, but there are some that are not, unfortunately. The hospital staff is really nice they are in the process of remodeling alot of the hospital. You can usually get an appointment when you need it, active duty & their dependants have priority. Louisville is nice, it takes awile to find your way around and is 45 minutes away depending on traffic, there is quite a bit to do there (ZOO, Several malls, Science Museum, Waterfront park, and various historic buildings, plus the fairgrounds where something is always going on including six flags). There are two small malls in Elizabethtown, and various other shopping experiences. There is also alot that I have not seen but is has been my experience that if I have to venture to far off of 31W (Dixie Highway) than I probably don't need it.
