Fort Lewis is the only post I have lived at so far, and I am going to be VERY sad to leave here. The weather is beautiful, even when it rains (which is alot), the landscape is gorgeous, and the people are friendly. The area is kind of confusing when you first move here, but it is easy to get used to. It is only 45 minutes from SEATAC, an hour and a half from Seattle, and two hours from Portland, OR. The area is full of malls and shopping centers with everything you need right near you. We are also right next to McChord AFB, so if the cmmissary on Fort Lewis is busy you can go 5 minutes to McChord and go to their commy. There is also tons of places to go camping, hiking, and fishing.
The housing has it's good points and it's bad point. We live in the Evergreen housing area, which is seperate houses with cute yards. The on housing area you will want to avoid is Old Hillside because it is multiplexes that are pretty old.
The post itself is kept up well, and has alot of beautiful historic buildings. North Fort has a lake and they are building shops and new homes over there.
If you choose to live off post there is tons of places to the north in Tacoma, or to the south in Olympia where you can live and be within 15 minutes of post.
This post is definately a great place to live. I have met so many great friend up here that I will keep for life on a message board called Fort Lewis Wives Club that I manage.
