Well Tinker is a base of it's own. It is large and mostly populated by civilian personnel and contractors. It helps if a spouse is looking for work on base. Cost of living is very reasonalbe here and plenty of nice neighborhoods and apartment complexes. Housing on base is hard to come by. it's about a year to year and 1/2 wait. Not so new on the outside, but they have been remodeled on the inside. We chose to buy a house since the housing office will only give us a 2 bedroom when we have had 3 at Pope and Cannon AFB.
There is always a lot to do on and off base, they have parades,summer fun days and all the amenities of other large bases. A new BX that opened November 2002 as well as a new stand alone Burger King across the street from the BX. it has a nice food court as well as an optical shop,styling salon,barber shop, clothing sales,GNC,and dry cleaners. The golf course is very popular. A new library was recently opened since the last one was taken by the 1999 tornado that came through. The Tinker Youth Center is located right in military housing, which is the best and the pool and bowling alley and shopette are there too. Everything is located just right.
There is a lot of construction immediatly off base for a new shopping district. Super Target Old Navy, Chili's, Olive Garden and other shops and restarants are due to open once it is finished. Tinker is right off one of the main interstates that runs through Oklahoma. It is really easy to find.
As long as you can deal with the souther drawls and the occasional bad driver, than anyone can make it here. take it from a Yankee!!!
