Eielson

Eielson AFB, AK

I have to say that I was stationed at Eielson AFB, AK and I loved it! It gets a lot of snow to go SLEDDING and snow machining. We had over 10 feet of accumulated snow in our yard the last year we were there. Its cold there, but what do you expect, its Alaska. The cold never stopped us from getting out and doing a lot of things, like site seeing, ice fishing, sledding, etc. There are a lot of small lakes and rivers in the area that are great for taking in the views. The mountains look like they are just a few miles away, but they are about 120 miles driving distance. It is flat land (for Alaska) around Eielson, but not like in the lower 48. Fairbanks has everything you need, unless you like the city life. Either you will love it here or hate it. If you prefer the city, I'd suggest not putting in for Eielson and try Elmendorf. I am desperately trying to get back to Eielson and probably retire there. I could go on and on, but this is short and to the point input.
