My husband and I spent 3 years at Eielson AFB and we enjoyed. Yes, it did take alittle while to get use to the cold, but that did not stop us from getting out and doing things. Plus, North Pole Ak is only 10 miles away and you can get there in 10 minutes. Fairbanks is 26 miles away and you can get there in 20 min depending on traffic and weather. In Fairbanks there is FT Wainright which has a much bigger BX/Commissary that include a Baskin Robbins, Robin Hood, Charlies, and a few more things. Fairbanks has everything you need including a Walmart and Boston Pizza which we did not have while we were stationed there. Yes it gets cold in the winter, but only 6-8 hours away is Anchorage and in Anchorage it really has everything, but no real nice night clubs. Anchorage is a city, and included are the PEOPLE. LOTS OF PEOPLE. Of course in Anchorage there are malls and a much bigger commissary and BX, but now that we are stationed at Elmendorf, I can tell you that even though Eielson may be small, we had a better selection of items to choose from. Eielson also has a great meat counter that other bases. Now the people, well, there are bad apples everywhere and it only takes one bad apple to ruin the whole bunch.
So if you are coming to Eielson don't let anyone scare you. You can make it a great place to live. Plus you come to Eielson you are centrally located to lots of great hunting, fishing and ATV riding. All of that is better than Elmendorf, but Elmo is closer to Ocean fishing. Plus, at Eielson you have more trips to go on and experience. At Elmo, nobody goes anywhere. Everyone figures they are all so close to it that they'll just get to it someday.
